WXStar - EFB Apps via WiFi

Use Case: EFB Apps via WiFi

WXStar broadcasts all weather data in GDL90 format on the Starlink Mini’s local WiFi network. GDL90-compatible EFB apps can pick it up once connected.

Compatible apps:

  • ForeFlight
  • SkyDemon
  • Garmin Pilot
  • Avidyne IFD440 / IFD540 (via WiFi)
  • Any other GDL90-compatible app

  • Scenario A — Starlink Stays Online

When the Starlink Mini stays connected throughout the flight, WXStar broadcasts GDL90 continuously. No additional app needed — it just works. Connect your iPad/phone to the Starlink Mini WiFi and configure your EFB app to receive GDL90 (see app-specific pages above for screenshots).

Scenario B — Reconnect Logic + WXStar App for SkyDemon

With Standby or Travel plans, and sometimes with an Aviation 300 MPH plan when the aircraft is temporarily faster than the plan allows, WXStar periodically reconnects the Starlink Mini to fetch fresh weather data. During the brief offline interval the WiFi disappears, which can cause a gap in SkyDemon.

The free WXStar app is mainly designed to bridge this gap for SkyDemon:

    • Passive monitoring: while WXStar is broadcasting GDL90 normally, the app only listens and stays silent.
    • Gap filler: when the WXStar GDL90 broadcast briefly stops during a Starlink reconnect, the app starts sending minimal GDL90 data so SkyDemon stays connected until WXStar resumes.
    • Automatic: runs in the background once configured — no in-flight interaction needed.
    • Free: no cost, no in-app purchases.

The result: a continuous EFB experience on a plan at ~10 EUR/month instead of $250+/month.
Requirements: phone or tablet with the WXStar app installed, connected to the Starlink Mini WiFi network, and SkyDemon configured for GDL90 as shown in the WXStar app.

ForeFlight usually handles short GDL90 interruptions from WXStar quite well without this app. Garmin Pilot normally listens to the regular WXStar GDL90 broadcast; using the WXStar app in parallel may interfere with that reception path and is not recommended.

Setup: Install the app → connect your device to the Starlink Mini WiFi → open the app (auto-detects WXStar) → in SkyDemon, configure GDL90 using the address/port shown in the WXStar app.
