WXStar - Weather Data

WXStar Weather Data

Having WXStar and a Starlink Mini, European pilots finally get the comfort and safety US pilots have experienced for years with their FIS-B system.

The system is designed to transmit all data types at least once every 5 minutes. After power up, you should receive a full set of data about 5 minutes after the internet connection is established by the Starlink Mini.

Weather Products

Product Update Interval Coverage
Radar Regional 15 minutes Approximately the size of France around your position
Radar Continental 15 minutes Wide area covering most of Western Europe
Cloud Tops 15 minutes Similar to regional radar, up to FL245
Lightning 10 minutes Similar to regional radar
Icing Forecast Periodic Multiple layers up to FL245
Turbulence Forecast Periodic Multiple layers up to FL245
METAR As published All reporting airports in wide area
TAF As published All reporting airports in wide area
Winds & Temperatures Periodic Many airports in your area

Radar Information

Most avionics will join the regional and continental radar images into a single display. The lower resolution continental radar covers a very wide area across Western Europe. The regional radar covers a smaller area in higher resolution around your position.

Cloud Tops

Generated from satellite images combined with GFS temperature predictions. Different colors indicate cloud tops up to FL245.

Icing and Turbulence

Predictions based on GFS data, displayed at different altitude layers up to FL245.

METAR and TAF

Text reports for all reporting airports in a wide area around your current position. For example, when flying in Germany you will receive METAR/TAF for Germany, surrounding countries, and beyond.

Winds and Temperatures

Wind and temperature reports for many airports in your area.

Note: Many avionics systems cannot display these reports because they were programmed for US-only waypoints. However, apps like Garmin Pilot can process these reports worldwide. The ball is in the field of avionics manufacturers to update their software.

What Can Your Avionics Display?

The data you can see depends on your avionics capabilities:

  • Older avionics (legacy G1000, G500, GPS695 etc.): Usually radar, METAR, TAF
  • Newer avionics (GTN750, G1000NXi etc.): Usually all data products

  • Please check your specific avionics documentation for supported weather products.
